Truth be told, the Update desk has been a lot livelier this season with Jost and Michael Che occasionally abandoning the straightforward make-a-joke-about-the-headlines-and-introduce-a-wacky-guest structure to banter and debate amongst themselves. And with political humor so vital to Saturday Night Live in election season, some extra focus on the news-angled segment couldn’t hurt. Splitsider theorizes that Jost’s job change will leave him more time to focus on Weekend Update. In fact, Jost’s name hasn’t appeared under the head-writer credit since last season’s finale hosted by Louis CK. Jost’s transition as a member of the writing staff was a quiet one until the eagle-eyed comedy scholars at Splitsider noticed his head-writer credit was absent from both this week’s end credits and Saturday Night Live’s online “ About” page. ![]() has one head writer and now there are two: Tucker and Klein. There’s some precedent for three head writers between 20, when Meyers took over for Tina Fey, the transition was eased by co-head writers Paula Pell and Andrew Steele. in 2014, Jost took over as head writer alongside longtime staff writers Bryan Tucker and Rob Klein he also took the seat at the Weekend Update desk that had been Meyers’s. Colin Jost, the heir apparent to Seth Meyers, is no longer a head writer on the show. But there’s been a significant behind-the-scenes change that, until this week, went largely unnoticed. Part of that is due to the ongoing presidential election, and between a Hillary Clinton guest spot and Larry David’s viral Bernie Sanders impression, the show is at its most culturally relevant. Three episodes into the 41st season of Saturday Night Live and the show feels noticeably different from the last few bumpy seasons.
